Educational Objectives

With the support of their supervisor and other staff, the Graduate Assistant will coordinate and advise the ASWSU student-led conferences, advise ASWSU committees and student organizations as assigned, and help plan, implement, and develop department/student organization trainings, programs, and events, as needed.  The graduate intern will also gain additional experience in various aspects of program and event planning, assessment and instruction, and communication and organizational leadership.

Specific Responsibilities

In collaboration with the supervisor and other staff, the Graduate Assistant will serve as principal advisor to coordinate and support 3 – 4 ASWSU Committees as assigned, and help plan, implement, and develop department/student organization trainings, programs, and events, as needed.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for training students, helping groups adhere to university policies and procedures, overseeing the organizations budget, reviewing contracts, and making sure they follow the university process, providing opportunities for leadership development for the organization, and assisting with program development of the organization and its goals.

Specifically, the ASWSU Advising Graduate Assistant facilitates the Crimson and Gray funding request process leading the allocation committee. 

The ASWSU Advising Graduate Assistant will be expected to work 20 hours per week.

Reports To

Associate Director for Programming and Governance, Center for Student Organizations and Leadership

Supervisory Responsibilities

Advise and support ASWSU committee and auxiliaries student leadership, and support volunteer undergraduate students within ASWSU committees and auxiliaries.

Work Requirements

9 month, 20 hours/week* (Aug 16-May 15)

Average of 20 hours per week is expected throughout the academic year, INCLUDING periods in which no classes are held (Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring Break); but schedule may be adjusted to account for those weeks and to schedule for some weeks involving more hours than others.*Position may begin earlier than notes if needed.

Tentative breakdown of duties:

  • 10% Other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • Most work is performed in an office environment, but some activities will occur outside in any weather condition and includes night and weekend work.
  • Occasional travel off campus to accompany student groups to retreats, events and conferences.
  • Light lifting may be necessary on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to travel across campus and access various types of buildings.
  • Speech, visual, and hearing abilities that are sufficient to read and view written materials and effectively communicate and interact with WSU staff and the public—both in person and over the telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree and acceptance into WSU graduate program in Higher Education, counseling, or related field.
  2. Basic knowledge of and experience with programming, advising, and related issues.
  3. Basic knowledge and understanding of leadership concepts.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to, and experience successfully advocating for diversity and the values of diversity.
  5. Demonstrated ability in using current computer technologies (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), email, and the internet.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with student organization membership and/or advisement.
  2. Team leadership and or management experience.

Pay and Benefits

Position receives an estimated $15,000 per academic year, plus in-state* tuition waiver.

Employee is responsible for some benefits and service fees. *Being a Washington state resident is not a requirement for this position, but the waiver is for the amount of in-state tuition only.
